Pain is a vital protective phenomenon but can also occur for extended time periods without protecting the body. In such chronic pain conditions, pain represents a highly disabling disorder and is a leading cause of disability worldwide20, 47. Current treatment approaches are often insufficient and can cause serious side effects as indicated by the current Opioid crisis42. Moreover, the development of pain therapeutics is stagnating52. Thus, novel approaches for the treatment of chronic pain are urgently needed28, 45, 52.
