Non-pharmacological therapies, such as mindfulness-based regimens,61 are often characterized as safe99 and effective approaches to treat clinical pain. Mindfulness meditation is a self-regulatory practice premised on sustaining non-reactive attention to arising sensory events that reproducibly reduces pain symptomology in response to clinical16,19,38,41,64,65,80,81 and experimentally induced pain.10,33,46,47,73,90,129,131,132,136 Yet, the corresponding mechanistic underpinnings of mindfulness-based practices remain poorly characterized.
