Instrumental control enhances placebo analgesia

Placebo analgesia occurs when the treatment context elicits expectancies that drive pain relief and is readily established both in experimental and clinical settings.16 Pharmacological and neuroimaging studies have begun to uncover the biological mechanisms of placebo analgesia, including the central role of ยต-opioids.11,27,29 An important remaining question concerns if and how we can tailor the treatment context to capitalise on the placebo effect and improve pain outcomes.
