Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are endopeptidases which contribute to trauma reaction after tissue injury. Among MMPs, MMP-2 and MMP-9 are also known as gelatinases. MMPs play an important role in neuropathic pain and mechanical allodynia but also in inflammation and edema in various tissues.39,53,66 These proteins seem to be significantly involved in bone repair after fracture7 and in physiological wound healing,37 while they are also upregulated in chronic wounds.49
