An expert panel involving the Analgesic, Anesthetic, and Addiction Clinical Trial Translations, Innovations, Opportunities, and Networks (ACTTION), American Pain Society (APS), and American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) established an initiative to develop a pain taxonomy (AAAPT) for the multidimensional classification of acute pain55,56. Within the AAAPT framework, acute pain was generally defined as pain experienced up to 7 days after the inciting event55. AAAPT defined the following five dimensions to broadly categorize acute pain conditions: 1) core criteria, 2) common features, 3) modulating factors, 4) impact/ functional consequences, and 5) putative pathophysiologic mechanisms55.
