Green light antinociceptive and reversal of thermal and mechanical hypersensitivity effects rely on endogenous opioid system stimulation

Current approaches to pain management include pharmacotherapies; though effective in some clinical settings, most pharmacologic options come with a host of undesirable adverse effects. For instance, the currently available treatments for peripheral neuropathy induced by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have significant side effects, such as headaches, nausea, and fatigue 12, 13, 44. Importantly, prolonged opioid intake may be problematic for HIV patients and is not recommended as a long-term solution for HIV-associated pain 2, 28.
