‘De-pathologising’ the psychological responses to injury and pain

Physiotherapists are encouraged to assess psychological symptoms in patients with musculoskeletal pain. Clinical Practice Guidelines recommend that patients who score above recommended cut-off scores on various psychological measures (e.g., depression and anxiety) might be referred to a psychologist for additional treatment (SIRA, 2014). Some patients with musculoskeletal pain may indeed present with a psychopathology such as severe anxiety and depression and these patients certainly need referral to a mental health care provider.
