Given the complex adverse effects of chronic pain on daily living, self-management training should be an essential component of care similar to self-management education for diabetes mellitus. However, systematic reviews have reported conflicting evidence regarding the effectiveness of self-management education for chronic pain and related conditions. A systematic review of self-management programs for osteoarthritis reported no significant effects on pain, function, or quality of life.21 On the other hand, a systematic review and meta-analysis found that multidisciplinary biopsychosocial rehabilitation training programs for chronic pain were superior to usual care in decreasing pain and disability.
